New course: Python for teens, from blocks to real code
· version v5
Teens aged 15–17 learn Python step by step: blocks that show real code first, then their own programs with loops, lists, functions and FizzBuzz.
Python is the language of data science, AI and automation, and one of the best first programming languages there is. The new Python course opens our track for ages 15–17 and runs entirely in the browser. Nothing to install.
From blocks to code
The first six levels use blocks, but right next to them teens see the real Python code their blocks create. In the last four levels the blocks are gone and they write code in a proper editor with syntax colors and automatic indentation.
What teens do
- write their first program with
print() - store values in variables and join text with numbers
- build a calculator that reads input
- make decisions with
if,elifandelse, and test the edge cases - repeat work with loops and add up 1 + 2 + … + n like Gauss
- read error messages and fix a broken program
- solve the classic FizzBuzz interview challenge
- work with lists: average, highest and lowest score
- write a function that checks whether a password is strong
Automatic tests, instant feedback
Every level comes with tests that run automatically, just like in real software development. When a test fails, teens see the expected and the actual output side by side, and error messages are explained in plain English. At the end they can download their program as a .py file and keep coding on their own computer.
As always, the first three levels are free, and the course takes about three lessons.
